What's Happening?
DeepOcean has been awarded a contract by BP to assist in the decommissioning and recycling activities at the Foinaven field, located on the UK Continental Shelf. The project involves the removal of 10 flexible process risers, three dynamic subsea umbilicals,
and one static umbilical from the former Foinaven FPSO location. Additionally, buoyancy modules, riser protection systems, clamps, and other associated subsea equipment will be recovered. The project will be managed from DeepOcean's Aberdeen operations center and will utilize one of the company's subsea construction vessels for offshore execution. This contract follows a similar model used in previous projects at the Don and Miller fields, aiming to enhance efficiency and cost optimization.
Why It's Important?
The contract highlights the growing focus on efficient and value-driven decommissioning in the offshore oil and gas industry. By employing innovative commercial models, DeepOcean and BP aim to optimize costs and improve operational flexibility. This approach not only addresses the environmental and regulatory demands of decommissioning but also seeks to recover value from these projects. The successful execution of such contracts can set a precedent for future decommissioning efforts, potentially influencing industry standards and practices.
What's Next?
The project is expected to proceed with engineering, project management, and offshore execution services from DeepOcean's Aberdeen center. The use of a subsea construction vessel will be crucial for the offshore work. As the industry continues to evolve, similar decommissioning projects may adopt this model, potentially leading to more collaborations between oil companies and specialized service providers like DeepOcean.
