What's Happening?
Starbucks has announced a collaboration with Universal Pictures to release new 'Wicked'-themed beverages and merchandise in anticipation of the upcoming movie. Starting Tuesday, customers in the U.S., Canada, and select international markets can purchase
two new 'Wicked' drinks: 'Elphaba’s Cold Brew' and 'Glinda’s Pink Potion.' 'Elphaba’s Cold Brew' is a peppermint cold brew topped with matcha cold foam and green sprinkles, while 'Glinda’s Pink Potion' is a Mango Dragonfruit Refresher shaken with coconut milk and freeze-dried dragonfruit, topped with non-dairy strawberry cold foam and pink sprinkles. Additionally, from November 7, Starbucks will offer 16 new tumblers, cold cups, and mini cup keychains inspired by the film's characters, the City of Oz, and its pink and green color scheme. The 'Discovery Series Collection' will also be expanded to include mugs featuring fictional locations from the movie, such as Munchkinland, the Emerald City, and Shiz University. New Emerald City-inspired gift cards, including a gold-colored mini card keychain with a minimum $50 load, will also be available.
Why It's Important?
This collaboration is significant for both Starbucks and Universal Pictures as it leverages popular culture to drive consumer engagement and sales. For Starbucks, aligning with a highly anticipated film like 'Wicked' can attract a broader customer base, including fans of the musical and movie, potentially increasing foot traffic and sales of both the themed beverages and merchandise. This strategy allows Starbucks to tap into the emotional connection consumers have with beloved franchises, creating a unique and timely offering. For Universal Pictures, the partnership provides extensive promotional reach through Starbucks' vast network of stores, generating buzz and excitement for the movie's release. This cross-promotional effort can significantly boost the film's visibility and box office potential by integrating it into daily consumer routines. The introduction of themed merchandise also creates additional revenue streams and strengthens brand loyalty for both companies, turning a cinematic event into a tangible consumer experience.
What's Next?
The 'Wicked' themed beverages are available starting this Tuesday, with the merchandise, including tumblers, cold cups, keychains, and expanded 'Discovery Series Collection' mugs, set to launch on November 7. The movie is scheduled for release on November 22, with 'Wicked Part Two' slated for November 21, 2025. The success of this initial collaboration will likely influence future cross-promotional strategies between major brands and entertainment franchises. Consumers can expect to see increased marketing efforts from both Starbucks and Universal Pictures leading up to the movie's premiere, further integrating the 'Wicked' theme into various aspects of daily life. The availability of special gift cards also suggests a push for holiday season gifting, capitalizing on the film's release timing.
Beyond the Headlines
This partnership highlights a growing trend of experiential marketing, where brands move beyond traditional advertising to create immersive experiences for consumers. By offering themed products, Starbucks is not just selling coffee; it's selling a piece of the 'Wicked' narrative, allowing fans to engage with the story in a new, tangible way. This approach blurs the lines between consumption and entertainment, fostering a deeper connection between the audience and the brand. The collaboration also underscores the power of intellectual property in driving commercial ventures, as popular stories and characters become platforms for diverse product lines. This strategy can set a precedent for how future blockbusters are promoted, potentially leading to more elaborate and integrated marketing campaigns that span multiple industries, from food and beverage to retail and entertainment. The ethical implications of such pervasive marketing, particularly its influence on consumer choices and brand loyalty, will continue to be a subject of discussion.
