Cymat Technologies, an Ontario-based materials company, has reached a commercial agreement with Rio Tinto Alcan to take over its aluminium metal matrix composites (MMC) business. This strategic move involves the transfer of Rio Tinto's commercial customers
to Cymat, as Rio Tinto exits the MMC business due to a strategic reorganization. MMCs are used in the automotive and rail industries for lightweight components requiring high wear resistance. Cymat plans to establish MMC production capabilities at its Mississauga plant, leveraging its expertise in stabilised aluminium foam (SAF) production.
Why It's Important?
This acquisition is significant for Cymat as it provides a new revenue stream and enhances its product offerings. By integrating MMC production, Cymat can reduce costs and expand its market reach, particularly in the automotive sector. The deal also aligns with the EU's Euro 7 Standard, which mandates reduced emissions from braking systems, presenting new business opportunities for MMCs. The company will work with MC21, a US-based MMC producer, to enhance its production capabilities.
