The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Board of Commissioners has authorized $110 million for two expansion projects at Terminal A of Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). This expansion aims to address the higher-than-anticipated passenger
traffic at the terminal, which handled approximately 18 million passengers in 2024, significantly exceeding its initial design capacity of 13 million. The plan includes a southern expansion that will add two new gates by 2029 and a northern expansion that will introduce six additional gates in phases starting in 2030. The southern expansion, costing $100 million, will add 25,000 square feet, including common-use gates, seating areas, restrooms, and grab-and-go concessions. The remaining $10 million will fund the initial planning for the northern expansion. This initiative is part of the broader EWR Vision Plan, which also encompasses a new Terminal B and a new AirTrain system.
