What's Happening?
The PGA Tour has announced that its Greensboro, North Carolina event will be elevated to the Championship Series starting in 2028. Raymond James, a financial services company, will become the title sponsor of the event beginning in 2027. This development
is part of a broader shift in the PGA Tour's competitive model, which will feature two tiers of events. The Greensboro event, historically known as the Greater Greensboro Open and more recently as the Wyndham Championship, will undergo a multi-million dollar renovation of the Sedgefield Country Club, a historic Donald Ross-designed course. The Championship Series will include 23-24 events, featuring the four majors, The Players Championship, and international team competitions.
Why It's Important?
The inclusion of the Greensboro event in the Championship Series signifies a major boost for the local economy and the prestige of the event. With Raymond James as the title sponsor, the event is expected to attract top-tier golfers, increasing tourism and local business revenue. The multi-million dollar renovation of Sedgefield Country Club will enhance the venue's appeal and could lead to increased attendance and media coverage. This move also reflects the PGA Tour's strategy to consolidate its schedule around high-profile events, potentially reshaping the competitive landscape of professional golf.
What's Next?
The PGA Tour is expected to announce the full 2028 schedule, including the Challenger Series events, in late January. The Greensboro event is likely to move to the spring starting in 2028, aligning with the new Championship Series schedule. Stakeholders, including local businesses and tourism officials, will be preparing to capitalize on the increased attention and economic activity associated with the event's elevated status.
