What's Happening?
Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) has announced an increase in the maximum list price for the 70% royalty option from $9.99 to $12.99, effective July 7. This change has been welcomed by the Authors Guild, which noted that the previous pricing policy
was disadvantageous for authors of longer works, box sets, and specialized nonfiction. The new policy allows authors greater flexibility in pricing their work, aligning Amazon more closely with other e-book self-publishing platforms such as Apple Books, Barnes & Noble Press, and Kobo.
Why It's Important?
The adjustment in Amazon KDP's royalty ceiling is significant for authors who publish longer or more specialized works, as it allows them to set prices that better reflect the value of their content. This change could lead to increased earnings for authors who previously had to lower their prices to fit within the old pricing structure. By aligning its policies with competitors, Amazon may also attract more authors to its platform, potentially increasing its market share in the e-book publishing industry. This move reflects a broader trend in the publishing industry towards providing more equitable compensation for content creators.
