What's Happening?
A study published in Psychotherapy Research reveals that individuals are more likely to choose psychotherapists with attractive faces from online directories, even when factors like trustworthiness and competence are controlled. The study involved 108
university students from Colombia and Peru, who were asked to select therapists from a mockup directory featuring profiles with varying levels of attractiveness. The findings suggest that attractive therapists benefit from a 'beautiful is good' halo effect, influencing potential clients' perceptions of their professional qualities.
Why It's Important?
This study highlights the impact of physical appearance on professional selection, particularly in fields where personal connection and trust are crucial, such as psychotherapy. The preference for attractive therapists could affect how mental health services are accessed and perceived, potentially disadvantaging equally competent professionals who do not fit conventional attractiveness standards. This could lead to broader discussions about bias in professional settings and the importance of focusing on qualifications and competence over superficial traits. For the U.S., where online therapist directories are common, these findings could influence how mental health services are marketed and accessed.
