Lockheed Martin is preparing to commence production of its upgraded Sniper Networked Targeting Pod (NTP) in 2027. This advanced targeting system is designed to enhance communication capabilities between fourth-generation fighters, the F-35, and future
Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA). The Sniper NTP will incorporate data cards that facilitate communication over the Multifunction Advanced Data Link (MADL) and the Mobile Ad-hoc Network (MANET). Paul Schulze, Lockheed Martin's director of Sniper international business development, highlighted the need for this upgrade due to latency issues with the existing Link 16 network. The new system aims to improve data transmission and expand network coverage, effectively acting as an additional 'cell tower' within the military communications network. Flight testing is currently underway, and the pod's chassis is being redesigned to accommodate the new technology.
