An American startup, Bedrock Ocean Exploration, has introduced a 132-pound autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) that has significantly reduced the cost and complexity of seabed surveying in the North Sea. The AUV, which can be launched from a platform
supply vessel, was used by First Marine Solutions to survey anchor spreads for a semi-submersible drilling rig. This method proved to be 92% cheaper than traditional methods involving large, crewed vessels. The AUV is equipped with advanced sensors and can operate at depths of up to 984 feet, providing high-resolution data that meets international hydrographic standards.
