What's Happening?
The rising jam-grass band Mountain Grass Unit (MGU) has released their latest album, 'Appalachian Smoke.' Recorded in Nashville with engineer Vance Powell, known for his work with artists like Chris Stapleton and Jack White, the album showcases MGU's
unique sound. Guitarist Luke Black and mandolinist Drury Anderson, along with bassist Sam Wilson and fiddler Josiah Nelson, debated the inclusion of an electric sitar in their song 'Eagle's Nest,' ultimately deciding it enhanced their sound. The band draws inspiration from modern artists such as Billy Strings and iconic groups like the Grateful Dead, aiming to push musical boundaries. Anderson describes 'Appalachian Smoke' as a homecoming theme, reflecting a yearning to return to nature and the mountains. The album is intended to capture the raw, improvisational energy of their live performances, with fluctuating tempos and a natural interplay between band members. MGU's approach is characterized by a blend of traditional and progressive bluegrass, notably without a banjo, which allows for a wider melodic range and incorporation of rock, country, and jam influences.
Why It's Important?
Mountain Grass Unit's innovative approach to bluegrass is significant for the U.S. music industry as it demonstrates the genre's evolving landscape and appeal to broader audiences. By incorporating elements of rock, country, and jam music, and notably omitting the traditional banjo, MGU is expanding the boundaries of bluegrass, potentially attracting listeners who might not typically engage with the genre. This fusion reflects a growing trend in music where artists blend traditional sounds with contemporary influences, creating new subgenres and revitalizing established ones. Their success on the national festival circuit and performances at venues like the Ryman Auditorium and Grand Ole Opry, as well as their collaboration with Shania Twain, highlight their increasing mainstream recognition. This could inspire other emerging artists to experiment with traditional forms, fostering innovation and diversity within the music scene. The band's emphasis on raw, improvisational playing also offers a counter-narrative to the increasingly digital and predictable nature of modern music production, resonating with audiences seeking authentic and organic musical experiences.
What's Next?
Mountain Grass Unit is currently selling out shows on their tour, indicating continued momentum for their new album, 'Appalachian Smoke.' Their recent performances at major festivals like the Telluride Bluegrass Festival and Under the Big Sky festival, along with their debut at the Ryman Auditorium and Grand Ole Opry, suggest a growing national presence. The band's collaboration with country megastar Shania Twain on her new album, 'Little Miss Twain,' further elevates their profile and could lead to more high-profile collaborations or cross-genre opportunities. As they continue to tour and gain exposure, MGU is likely to expand their fanbase and solidify their position as a leading act in the jam-grass scene. Their unique sound and improvisational style may also influence other emerging bluegrass and Americana artists, potentially shaping the future direction of these genres. The band's commitment to authentic, raw music could also attract listeners seeking alternatives to digitally produced sounds, further boosting their appeal.
Beyond the Headlines
Mountain Grass Unit's rise highlights a deeper cultural shift in the appreciation of traditional American music forms, particularly bluegrass, in an increasingly digital world. Guitarist Luke Black suggests that the boom in artificial intelligence and predictable, generated content in music is met with a counter-movement towards raw, improvisational, and 'broken down' sounds like bluegrass. This indicates a yearning for authenticity and human connection in artistic expression. The band's decision to forgo a banjo, a staple of traditional bluegrass, while still honoring the genre's roots, reflects a broader artistic freedom and willingness to challenge conventions. This approach allows for a wider melodic space and the integration of diverse musical influences, demonstrating that tradition can evolve without losing its essence. Their journey from playing local gigs and live streams during the pandemic to national recognition also underscores the power of grassroots efforts and digital platforms in building a fanbase and sustaining artistic careers in the modern era.
