What's Happening?
Artforum magazine has ended its long-standing tradition of featuring back-cover advertisements by Swiss gallerist Bruno Bischofberger. Since 1986, Bischofberger's ads have been a staple of the magazine, showcasing photographs of Swiss life rather than
art. This month, the magazine paid tribute to Bischofberger, who passed away in May at the age of 86, by featuring an artwork of Andy Warhol's portrait of Bischofberger with the simple line 'In Memoriam'. Bischofberger was instrumental in introducing European audiences to artists like Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat.
Why It's Important?
The conclusion of this series marks the end of an era for Artforum and the art community, highlighting the significant influence Bischofberger had in the art world. His unique approach to advertising and his role in promoting major artists have left a lasting impact. This tribute not only honors his legacy but also underscores the evolving nature of art marketing and the magazine's content. The change may influence how art is presented in media, potentially affecting galleries and artists who rely on such platforms for exposure.
