What's Happening?
Ford Motor Company's Digital Product Design (DPD) team is actively seeking a Product Designer specializing in design system governance. This role is crucial for ensuring the scalability, consistency, and reliability of Ford's design system across its
vehicle software and mobile applications. The successful candidate will be responsible for reviewing feature designs and proposed components to ensure alignment with system standards, accessibility (WCAG), and overall quality. Key responsibilities also include maintaining governance practices, such as contribution guidelines, review processes, versioning, and documentation for component lifecycles. The designer will support the intake and prioritization of system requests, prepare review sessions, and track decisions, actions, and dependencies. Furthermore, the role involves auditing the system for gaps, redundancies, outdated components, and accessibility issues, and driving improvements. The position requires strong communication and facilitation skills to build consensus and partner with various teams, including product, engineering, and accessibility, to align priorities and resolve issues across platforms. A portfolio submission, in addition to a resume, is a mandatory requirement for consideration.
Why It's Important?
This hiring initiative by Ford Motor Company underscores the increasing importance of robust and consistent digital product design in the automotive industry. As vehicles become more integrated with advanced software and mobile applications, a well-governed design system is critical for delivering a seamless and intuitive user experience. This role directly impacts Ford's ability to maintain brand consistency and user satisfaction across its diverse digital ecosystem, from in-car infotainment to companion mobile apps. By focusing on design system governance, Ford aims to streamline development processes, reduce design debt, and ensure that all digital products meet high standards of quality and accessibility. This investment in design infrastructure can lead to faster product development cycles, more efficient resource allocation, and a stronger competitive edge in the rapidly evolving automotive technology landscape. The emphasis on accessibility (WCAG) also highlights Ford's commitment to inclusive design, ensuring its products are usable by a wider range of customers.
What's Next?
Ford will proceed with the recruitment process, evaluating candidates based on their portfolios, experience in product design, understanding of design system principles like Atomic Design, and proficiency with tools such as Figma or Storybook. The selected Product Designer will then integrate into the DPD team, focusing on implementing and refining governance practices for Ford's digital products. This will involve continuous collaboration with cross-functional teams to ensure adherence to design standards and to address any emerging design or technical challenges. The role will also contribute to the ongoing evolution of Ford's design language and shared systems, impacting future product development and user interface updates. Success in this role will likely lead to more efficient design workflows, improved product quality, and a more cohesive brand experience for Ford customers across their digital touchpoints. The company's commitment to a hybrid work model, requiring at least four days onsite, suggests a focus on in-person collaboration for this critical design function.
Beyond the Headlines
The creation of this specialized role reflects a broader industry trend where large enterprises are recognizing the strategic value of design systems. Beyond mere aesthetics, design systems are becoming foundational infrastructure for digital product development, enabling companies to scale their design efforts without sacrificing consistency or quality. This move by Ford signifies a shift towards a more mature and disciplined approach to digital product creation, where design is treated as a scalable asset rather than a series of one-off projects. The focus on governance also points to the complexities of managing design at an enterprise level, especially in an industry like automotive where digital interfaces are becoming as critical as mechanical engineering. This role could set a precedent for how other traditional manufacturing companies approach their digital transformation, emphasizing the need for dedicated roles and processes to manage the integrity and evolution of their digital design language. It also highlights the growing demand for designers with strong systems thinking and governance expertise.
