What's Happening?
BATTR, a dessert shop specializing in customizable treats, has opened a new location at 15000 Detroit Avenue in Lakewood. This new establishment, which began operations on July 3, offers a variety of desserts including gelato, bubble waffles, handheld
crepes, bubble tea, and espresso drinks. The Lakewood store is an expansion of BATTR's original Tremont location and provides a significantly larger space. Co-owner Amir Elkatib, a Lakewood native, chose his hometown for the expansion due to its vibrant food scene and a perceived gap in dessert options. Customers at BATTR utilize self-service kiosks to customize their orders, selecting from various gelato flavors, sauces, and toppings. The kiosks are strategically placed near the prep station, allowing customers to observe their orders being made and interact with staff. The shop emphasizes fresh, in-house preparation, making its waffle and crepe batter from scratch, along with the vanilla custard for its crème brûlée desserts. BATTR features 12 rotating gelato flavors, with five core options and seven daily rotations, including unique flavors like ube and matcha.
Why It's Important?
The opening of BATTR on Detroit Avenue signifies a notable addition to Lakewood's local economy and culinary landscape. For residents, it introduces a new and diverse dessert option, potentially enhancing the city's appeal as a dining destination. The business's focus on customizable products and fresh, in-house preparation could set a new standard for dessert offerings in the area, encouraging other local businesses to innovate. From an economic perspective, BATTR's expansion creates new job opportunities within the community and contributes to the local tax base. The choice of Lakewood by a local entrepreneur like Amir Elkatib underscores the city's attractiveness for business development, particularly in the food sector. The integration of self-service kiosks, while maintaining staff interaction, reflects a modern approach to customer service that could influence other retail establishments in the region. This blend of technology and personalized experience aims to cater to evolving consumer preferences, potentially drawing customers from neighboring areas and boosting local foot traffic.
What's Next?
BATTR plans to further expand its online presence by updating its website and increasing its content across social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok. The immediate focus remains on growing the Lakewood store and enhancing the in-person customer experience, allowing patrons to witness their orders being crafted. The shop will continue to experiment with new flavors, as evidenced by the recent revamp of its Dubai chocolate gelato, which is slated for a return. As the business settles into its new location, it will likely monitor customer feedback and sales trends to refine its offerings and operational strategies. The success of this expansion could pave the way for future growth, potentially leading to more locations or an expanded menu. The emphasis on fresh, customizable desserts suggests a continuous effort to innovate and cater to diverse tastes, ensuring a dynamic and engaging experience for its clientele.
Beyond the Headlines
The opening of BATTR highlights a broader trend in the food service industry towards customization and experiential dining. The use of self-service kiosks, while common in fast-casual settings, is being integrated into more specialized food establishments to streamline ordering and enhance customer engagement. This approach allows for greater personalization, catering to individual preferences and dietary needs, which is increasingly valued by consumers. Furthermore, the commitment to making items from scratch, such as waffle and crepe batter and vanilla custard, reflects a growing demand for transparency and quality in food preparation. This trend towards artisanal and freshly made products contrasts with mass-produced alternatives, appealing to a consumer base that prioritizes authenticity and flavor. The success of businesses like BATTR could influence urban planning and economic development strategies in cities like Lakewood, encouraging the establishment of unique, experience-driven retail and dining options that contribute to the local character and appeal.
