Borussia Dortmund, a prominent German football club, has announced a strategic partnership with ABB, a global technology leader in electrification and automation. This collaboration aims to transform SIGNAL IDUNA PARK, Germany's largest football stadium,
into a showcase for smart energy management, resilient electrification, and intelligent building automation. SIGNAL IDUNA PARK, originally opened in 1974, presents a unique challenge as an established venue with infrastructure that has evolved over decades. The stadium already boasts the world's most powerful photovoltaic system on a football stadium roof, with an installed capacity of up to 5 MWp, and plans for a 3.75 MWh battery storage system by year-end. This initiative aligns with Borussia Dortmund's climate goals, which are validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The modernization efforts include electrical infrastructure, KNX-based building automation, heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), and energy management systems, all integrated into an ISO 50001-certified energy management system.
