What's Happening?
Norwegian has announced a significant acquisition of the Nordic Leisure Travel Group (NLTG) for SKr7.94 billion ($845 million). This strategic move aims to create an integrated travel group that spans both business and leisure segments. NLTG, known for operating
brands such as Ving, Spies, Tjareborg, and Globetrotter, also includes the Scandinavian charter operator Sunclass Airlines. The acquisition is expected to enhance Norwegian's operating revenues by nearly 50% and is projected to be earnings accretive by 2027. The deal, which is anticipated to close in the latter half of the year, will bring together Norwegian, its regional subsidiary Wideroe, and NLTG under a single ownership structure, encompassing close to 160 aircraft and serving approximately 30 million customers annually.
Why It's Important?
This acquisition is a pivotal step for Norwegian as it seeks to solidify its position as a leading integrated travel group in the Nordics. By combining NLTG's leisure travel expertise with Norwegian's extensive route network, the company aims to offer a more comprehensive and flexible customer experience. The deal is expected to unlock substantial synergies, providing significant growth opportunities in hotel and holiday sales across its existing customer base. This move not only strengthens Norwegian's market presence in Sweden and Denmark but also enhances its ability to drive booking visibility and load factors. The acquisition reflects Norwegian's strategic ambition to create long-term value for its shareholders and secure Nordic ownership of NLTG.
What's Next?
Upon completion of the acquisition, Norwegian plans to integrate NLTG's operations with its own, focusing on optimizing route coordination and improving utilization. The current owners of NLTG, including Strawberry, Altor, and TDR, will become significant shareholders in the combined group. Norwegian's board, which unanimously supports the transaction, anticipates that the integration will lead to a more comprehensive product offering for customers of Norwegian, Wideroe, and NLTG. The company will continue to explore opportunities for growth and expansion within the Nordic region, leveraging the combined strengths of its newly acquired assets.
