New research published in the journal PLOS Medicine indicates a significant link between prolonged sedentary behavior and an increased risk of certain cancers and cancer-related death. The study, which tracked 91,292 adults using wrist trackers for over
12 years, found that individuals who engaged in prolonged sitting (more than 30 minutes at a time) had a higher risk of developing cancers such as breast, colorectal, esophageal, thyroid, and liver cancer, as well as a higher risk of dying from cancer. Conversely, breaking up sedentary time with even light physical activity, like walking or doing chores, was associated with a reduced risk of cancer-related death. Replacing just 30 minutes of sitting with moderate activity reduced cancer-related death risk by 8%, while five minutes of vigorous exercise reduced it by 22%.
