A new forecast by BloombergNEF indicates that U.S. data centers are expected to consume approximately 20% of the nation's electricity by 2035, a significant increase from the current 5.9%. The demand projection for 2035 has been raised to 194 gigawatts,
marking an 83% increase from a previous forecast issued in December. This surge is attributed to the rapid development of AI facilities, which are not yet fully constructed but are entering the development pipeline. The report highlights that even with a record pace of grid connections, there will be a 19 gigawatt supply shortfall. The demand for electricity is particularly high in states like Virginia and Texas, which are expected to exceed the national average.
