What's Happening?
ATHLOS, the women's-only track league founded by Alexis Ohanian, has announced the cancellation of its planned New York meet for 2026. The event, which was scheduled for October 2 at Icahn Stadium, Manhattan, will not proceed this year. Instead, ATHLOS will concentrate
its efforts entirely on its London meet, set for September 18 at StoneX Stadium. Alexis Ohanian, founder of ATHLOS, communicated this decision directly to athletes via Instagram, stating that the choice was made based on feedback indicating that asking athletes to compete at their peak so late in the season, after a full schedule, was too demanding. Sha'Carri Richardson, Gabby Thomas, and Tara Davis-Woodhall are among the Olympic champions who serve as owner-advisors for ATHLOS, playing a role in shaping the organization's future. The London event is expected to feature top athletes including Keely Hodgkinson, Tara Davis-Woodhall, Gabby Thomas, Masai Russell, and Sha’Carri Richardson.
Why It's Important?
This decision by ATHLOS highlights the growing challenges and considerations within the professional track and field calendar, particularly concerning athlete welfare and peak performance. By canceling the New York event, ATHLOS acknowledges the physical demands placed on elite athletes and aims to create a more sustainable competition schedule. This move could influence other sports organizations to re-evaluate their event timings and athlete commitments, potentially leading to a more athlete-centric approach in scheduling. For U.S. track and field, the cancellation means a prominent domestic event featuring top American athletes like Sha'Carri Richardson will not occur, potentially reducing opportunities for U.S. fans to see these stars compete on home soil this year. However, the commitment to the London meet and plans for New York's return in 2027 suggest a strategic long-term vision for ATHLOS to align with the global athletics calendar, which could ultimately benefit the sport by ensuring higher quality performances.
What's Next?
ATHLOS will now channel all its resources into making the London meet on September 18 an "amazing event," as stated by Alexis Ohanian. The league has indicated that the StoneX Stadium in Barnet, north London, is nearly sold out, demonstrating strong interest in the international event. Looking ahead, ATHLOS plans to align its events with the global athletics calendar starting in the 2027 season. Ohanian has also mentioned that planning for ATHLOS to return to New York in 2027 has already begun, alongside the development of other potential events. This suggests a strategic shift towards integrating ATHLOS more seamlessly into the broader track and field season, aiming to provide optimal conditions for athletes to perform at their best. The BBC will broadcast the London event, ensuring significant viewership.
Beyond the Headlines
The cancellation of the New York meet by ATHLOS, a league specifically designed to elevate women's track and field, underscores a broader conversation about the sustainability and structure of professional sports seasons. The feedback from athletes, which directly influenced this decision, highlights the increasing agency of athletes in shaping their competitive environments. This could set a precedent for other sports, emphasizing athlete well-being over an overly packed schedule. The move also reflects the competitive landscape of track and field, with the introduction of events like the World Athletics Ultimate Championships, which offer substantial prize money and influence athlete participation. ATHLOS's commitment to aligning with the global athletics calendar in 2027 suggests a strategic adaptation to these evolving dynamics, aiming for long-term relevance and success by prioritizing athlete health and performance within a more harmonized international schedule.
