What's Happening?
Recast Capital, a platform supporting next-generation venture managers, has announced a three-year partnership with IDB Lab, the innovation and venture arm of the Inter-American Development Bank Group (IDB Group). This collaboration aims to extend Recast Capital's
'Accelerate' program to venture managers across Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). The initiative, named the LAC Emerging Fund Managers Launchpad, will integrate managers from the region into existing U.S.-based Accelerate cohorts. The program offers a twelve-month curriculum, peer support, executive coaching, and shared services covering investor relations, pitch refinement, sales training, legal, operations, fund finance, exit management, and AI and automation support. Content will be tailored to regional conditions, including local service providers and limited partner archetypes. This expansion addresses the concentration of venture capital in Brazil and Mexico, which attracted over 70% of regional venture dollars, leaving other areas with less than 5%. The partnership seeks to build a robust support system for emerging local fund managers in underserved markets.
Why It's Important?
This partnership is crucial for fostering economic development and innovation in Latin America and the Caribbean by strengthening the venture capital ecosystem. By extending the Accelerate program, Recast Capital and IDB Lab are directly addressing the significant disparity in venture capital distribution across the region. The initiative will empower local fund managers, who are better positioned to identify and support founders in their respective markets, thereby stimulating new industries and economic growth. For the U.S., this collaboration can lead to increased investment opportunities and stronger economic ties with LAC countries. A more robust venture capital landscape in the region could also create new markets for U.S. businesses and technology, fostering a mutually beneficial economic relationship. The program's focus on providing comprehensive support, from training to operational assistance, is vital for the long-term sustainability and success of these emerging funds, ultimately contributing to a more dynamic and diversified global economy.
What's Next?
The LAC Emerging Fund Managers Launchpad will commence with managers from Latin America and the Caribbean joining the core Accelerate cohorts alongside U.S.-based participants. In addition to the main program, Recast Capital will conduct Aspiring Fund Manager Bootcamps, a series of workshops designed for prospective fund managers, such as angel investors and operators, who are considering launching their first fund. The program will also engage with limited partners across the region to enhance their understanding of venture capital and encourage greater capital mobilization into local venture funds. Furthermore, Recast Capital plans to publish research on the LAC cohorts in collaboration with the Milken Institute, similar to its previous work with U.S. cohorts. This research will provide valuable insights into the demographics of the founders supported by these managers, contributing to a deeper understanding of the regional venture landscape and its impact.
Beyond the Headlines
The partnership between Recast Capital and IDB Lab signifies a broader trend towards international collaboration in fostering entrepreneurial ecosystems, particularly in regions with nascent venture capital markets. Beyond direct financial and operational support, the initiative aims to cultivate a culture of innovation and risk-taking that is essential for long-term economic transformation. By integrating LAC managers with their U.S. counterparts, the program facilitates cross-cultural learning and networking, potentially leading to a more interconnected global venture community. The focus on local fund managers also promotes a more inclusive form of economic development, ensuring that capital and expertise are distributed more equitably. This approach could serve as a model for other development banks and private sector entities looking to catalyze growth in emerging markets, highlighting the importance of tailored support and localized strategies in building sustainable economic infrastructure.
