Koray Özpolat, a professor of supply chain management at the University of Rhode Island (URI) College of Business, has received an honorable mention in the United Nations' Principles for Responsible Management
Education (PRME) Awards. Özpolat was the sole honoree from a U.S. university, recognized for his classroom initiative titled 'Teaching Supply Chain Sustainability and Cross-Cultural Communication by a Case Competition.' This project involves URI students collaborating with international peers from various universities to analyze real-world sustainability challenges faced by companies and to propose practical solutions. The students submit written case analyses, and top teams present their findings to a panel of judges. The UN PRME Awards acknowledge contributions in pedagogy, curriculum, research, and academic development that demonstrate educational quality, relevance, impact, and advancement of the UN's sustainable development goals. Özpolat's project specifically supports goals such as 'Quality Education,' 'Responsible Consumption and Production,' and 'Partnerships for the Goals' by fostering experiential learning, reducing waste, improving efficiency, and encouraging international collaboration.

The 'Rhode Island High School Sustainable Logistics Case Competition' is slated to launch in the 2027–2028 academic year. This expansion indicates a commitment to fostering sustainability awareness and problem-solving skills at an earlier educational stage, potentially inspiring a new generation to pursue careers in sustainable business and supply chain management. The continued growth of the university-level competition, which started with two teams in 2023 and expanded to 11 teams and 22 URI students working with partners from nine countries by 2025, suggests increasing engagement and interest in these critical topics. This trajectory points towards a broader integration of sustainability and global collaboration into educational curricula, from high school through higher education.
