Barber's Farmhouse Cheesemakers, the world's oldest cheddar-maker, has implemented ultraefficient heat pumps from U.K. startup Arkaya Energy to reduce its energy consumption. These heat pumps are used to cool milk and heat water simultaneously, replacing
conventional chillers and electric-resistance heaters. This innovation has allowed Barber's to cut its electricity use in half, saving approximately $94,000 annually and reducing carbon emissions by nearly 66 tons per year. The company has installed these heat pumps at three of its seven milking parlors.
