What's Happening?
A coalition of music industry and artists' organizations has introduced new labels to identify works that utilize artificial intelligence (AI) in sound recordings. These labels are designed to distinguish between 'AI-generated' and 'AI-assisted' tracks.
The initiative is supported by major groups such as the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), IFPI, the Grammys, SAG-AFTRA, and the Human Artistry Campaign. The labeling system is voluntary and aims to be adopted by digital music services and distributors. The 'AI-Generated' label indicates that generative AI was used in the entirety or primary portion of the recording, while the 'AI-assisted' label signifies that the work was primarily created by humans with some AI elements. Currently, the labels do not cover AI use in lyrics, composition, music videos, or cover art.
Why It's Important?
The introduction of these labels is significant as it addresses the growing influence of AI in the music industry. With streaming services like Deezer reporting that AI-generated tracks constitute a substantial portion of new music, transparency becomes crucial for consumers. The labels aim to provide clarity to music fans who value human artistry and authenticity. This move also highlights the industry's recognition of AI's creative potential while ensuring that human contributions are acknowledged. By establishing a framework for AI usage, the music industry can better navigate the ethical and economic implications of AI in music production, potentially influencing how rights holders are compensated.
What's Next?
As the adoption of these labels grows, the music industry may see further developments in how AI is integrated into music production. Stakeholders, including streaming platforms and rights holders, are likely to engage in discussions to refine the framework and address issues such as fair remuneration for rights holders. The industry may also explore expanding the labeling system to cover other aspects of music creation, such as lyrics and composition. Continued collaboration among industry players will be essential to establish fair and practical standards for AI in music.
