What's Happening?
The Cairo Film Connection, the co-production and development platform of the Cairo International Film Festival, has unveiled the official list of 16 projects chosen to participate in its 12th edition. These projects, selected from 193 submissions across
15 Arab countries, will compete for various funding awards, grants, and services. The 12th edition of the Cairo Film Connection will take place from November 11 to 20, 2026, as part of the 47th Cairo International Film Festival. The selected projects include 9 fiction projects in development, 4 non-fiction projects in development, and 3 non-fiction projects in post-production, showcasing a diverse range of production stages and narrative forms, as well as a wide geographical representation. Filmmakers behind these projects will have the opportunity to meet with producers, financiers, distributors, and cinematic institutions during the event.
Why It's Important?
The Cairo Film Connection plays a crucial role in fostering the growth and international recognition of Arab cinema. By connecting Arab filmmakers with funding sources, production partners, and distribution channels, the platform helps bring diverse stories to global audiences. The support provided through awards and grants enables the development and completion of films that might otherwise struggle to secure financing. The success of alumni films at major international festivals like Venice, Cannes, and Berlin highlights the Connection's impact on elevating Arab cinematic talent on the world stage. This initiative not only supports individual filmmakers but also contributes to the cultural exchange and understanding facilitated by cinema, showcasing the rich narratives and perspectives from the Arab world.
What's Next?
The selected filmmakers will engage in direct networking opportunities with industry partners during the Cairo Film Connection events in November. Following these meetings, the final award winners will be announced. This announcement marks a significant step for the chosen projects, providing them with crucial financial and logistical support to advance their production. The Cairo Film Connection will continue its mission to provide an integrated professional infrastructure for the film industry, aiming to further solidify its position as a vital platform for discovering new talents and projects in Arab cinema. The 47th Cairo International Film Festival, under the auspices of the Egyptian Ministry of Culture, will host these events, further emphasizing the institutional support for the region's film industry.
Beyond the Headlines
The Cairo Film Connection's sustained efforts since its inception in 2010 (and relaunch in 2018) reflect a broader commitment to building a robust and interconnected Arab film industry. The platform's emphasis on co-production spaces and its track record of providing over $1.3 million in awards underscore the economic and creative investment in regional storytelling. The international success of films like 'Four Daughters' by Kaouther Ben Hania, which benefited from the Connection's support, demonstrates how such initiatives can bridge cultural divides and bring unique narratives to a global audience. This ongoing support helps to diversify the cinematic landscape, offering alternatives to mainstream productions and promoting a deeper appreciation for the artistic and cultural contributions of Arab filmmakers.
