What's Happening?
The University of Hawai'i at Mānoa Athletics Department has generated over $750 million in economic activity since fiscal year 2023, according to a study by Collegiate Consulting, funded by private donors. This figure represents an annual economic impact
of approximately $188 million, significantly exceeding the department's operating budget of roughly $66 million. The operating budget is supported by university funding, sponsorships, student fees, and private donors. Governor Josh Green praised the department's impact on the state, highlighting its contribution to Hawai'i's economy and future. The economic activity is categorized into athletic events and direct spending, UH athletic salaries and personal spending, broader revenue including sponsorships and media partnerships, and infrastructure investments. The study also indicated that the athletics program supported more than 1,200 jobs in fiscal year 2025.
Why It's Important?
This substantial economic impact underscores the significant role of collegiate athletics, particularly the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa Athletics, as a major economic driver for the state. The $750 million generated since 2023 demonstrates that the department is not merely a cost center but a vital contributor to local employment and revenue streams. The findings provide a strong argument for continued investment in UH Athletics, especially as the university transitions into the Mountain West Division and faces increased competition from Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) programs nationwide. The economic benefits extend beyond direct athletic spending, influencing various sectors through salaries, sponsorships, and infrastructure development, thereby supporting a broader economic ecosystem within Hawai'i.
What's Next?
School officials, including UH Athletics Director Matt Elliott, emphasize the critical need for continued investment in the department to maintain its competitive edge and economic contributions. As UH Mānoa integrates into the Mountain West Division and navigates the evolving landscape of NIL programs, strategic financial planning and donor support will be crucial. The ongoing success of the athletics program is seen as directly linked to the state's overall economic health and the university's prosperity. Future efforts will likely focus on leveraging this proven economic impact to secure further funding and support, ensuring the department can continue to thrive and generate benefits for the community.
Beyond the Headlines
The study's findings highlight a broader trend in collegiate sports where athletic programs are increasingly recognized for their significant economic footprint beyond their primary educational and competitive functions. This economic impact can influence public policy decisions regarding funding for higher education and sports infrastructure. The emphasis on job creation and broader revenue generation positions UH Athletics as a key community asset, fostering a sense of collective identity and pride. The ripple effect described by Director Elliott suggests that the success of the athletic department can inspire and unite the community, creating intangible social benefits alongside the tangible economic ones.
