An 8-week randomized, double-blind, three-arm comparative trial investigated the effects of three different Gochujang formulations on postmenopausal women experiencing moderate-to-severe menopausal symptoms. The study, conducted in the Republic of Korea,
involved 59 participants who consumed either a high-microorganism Gochujang (HTG), a low-microorganism Gochujang (LTG), or a commercial Gochujang (CG). All three formulations led to significant reductions in menopausal symptom severity, as measured by the Kupperman Menopausal Index (KMI) scores. Additionally, all groups experienced a decrease in percent body fat (PBF). While shifts in gut microbiota composition and reductions in fecal short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) were observed across all groups, there were no statistically significant differences in outcomes between the three Gochujang formulations. The study highlights that Gochujang consumption was safe and well-tolerated, with no reported adverse events.
