What's Happening?
Seattle-based band Pregnant Dad is notably drawing inspiration from grunge music, particularly Nirvana, in their sound. The band's guitarist and vocalist, SokS, along with other members, are fans of Nirvana and learned to play from their debut album,
'Bleach.' One of Pregnant Dad's early songs, 'Alleged Allegations,' directly uses the chord progression from Nirvana's 'About a Girl.' SokS explained that they took the idea of 'About a Girl' being a twisted, nontraditional love song and applied it to 'Alleged Allegations,' which is about a high school acquaintance known for mistreating women. Pregnant Dad is a trans-majority punk band that incorporates elements of metal, creating an aggressive and high-energy sound.
Why It's Important?
This development highlights the enduring legacy of grunge music and Nirvana's continued influence on contemporary bands, particularly within the Seattle music scene. Pregnant Dad's direct appropriation of Nirvana's chord progressions demonstrates how foundational elements of past genres can be reinterpreted and integrated into new musical expressions. This not only pays homage to their predecessors but also introduces grunge elements to a new generation through a modern punk and metal lens. The band's identity as a trans-majority group also signifies the evolving landscape of music, where diverse voices are contributing to and reshaping established genres, bringing new perspectives and narratives to the forefront of rock music.
What's Next?
Pregnant Dad is expected to continue performing and releasing music, with their debut album 'It's a Boy' recently launched. Their upcoming performances at the Cha-Cha Lounge and a house show in Tacoma indicate ongoing engagement with their audience. The band's unique blend of grunge, punk, and metal, coupled with their unapologetic stage personality and socially conscious lyrics (as seen in their song 'Cal Anderson' about the Trans community), suggests they will continue to carve out a distinct niche in the music scene. Their continued exploration of musical influences, including Oingo Boingo, The Police, and various metal and indie acts, promises a dynamic and evolving sound.
Beyond the Headlines
Pregnant Dad's approach to music, which blends homage to grunge with contemporary punk and metal, reflects a broader trend in art where historical influences are recontextualized to address modern social issues. Their song 'Cal Anderson,' which tackles transphobia and the sensationalization of the Queer community, demonstrates how music can serve as a powerful platform for social commentary and advocacy. The band's willingness to be 'offensive to anyone with ears' and their 'unapologetic nature' challenge conventional norms in music and performance, pushing boundaries and fostering a more inclusive and diverse artistic landscape. This also underscores the role of music in community building and expressing marginalized voices.
