What's Happening?
Netflix has granted an early Season 3 renewal to its mystery drama series, 'The Hunting Wives,' starring Brittany Snow and Malin Åkerman. This renewal comes approximately a month and a half before the scheduled release of Season 2 on November 26. The series, based
on May Cobb's bestselling novel and created by Rebecca Cutter, will have an eight-episode third season, with casting already underway. 'The Hunting Wives' initially began as a U.S.-only acquisition by Netflix for its first season, which had been developed for Starz. Following its strong performance, including five weeks in Netflix’s Global Top 10 English-language TV list and reaching No. 1 in 10 countries, Netflix secured broader international rights and commissioned subsequent seasons as Netflix Originals.
Why It's Important?
This early renewal signifies Netflix's confidence in 'The Hunting Wives' and its strategy to secure popular content for its global audience. The show's unique journey, from a U.S.-only acquisition to a globally distributed Netflix Original, highlights the platform's adaptability in content acquisition and production. For the streaming industry, this demonstrates a trend towards quicker renewal decisions for successful shows, aiming to maintain audience engagement and reduce the time between seasons. The series' success, despite its initial limited availability, underscores the power of strong narrative and character development in attracting viewers. This move also benefits Lionsgate Television and 3 Arts Entertainment, the production companies, by ensuring continued work and revenue from a successful property.
What's Next?
With Season 3 already greenlit, production for 'The Hunting Wives' will likely proceed efficiently, aiming for a quicker turnaround between seasons, which is becoming a standard for streamers. Viewers can anticipate the release of Season 2 on November 26, which will further build anticipation for the newly announced third season. Showrunner Rebecca Cutter has promised an even more scandalous and twisted Season 3, suggesting continued dramatic developments for the characters in Maple Brook. The early renewal also allows for more strategic planning in terms of casting and storyline development, potentially attracting more high-profile talent to the series.
