What's Happening?
Adept Technologies, in collaboration with the International Trade Centre (ITC) and under Kenya’s Ajira Digital Program, has designed and managed transcription and digitization workflows to support the Kenyan Judiciary's digitization journey. This initiative
involved establishing operations across multiple locations and recruiting and training young people to undertake digital work. The ITC provided the training for these young individuals. The program has successfully trained over 1,900 young people, created more than 800 employment opportunities, and operated in 131 courts across 36 counties. Key outputs include transcribing over 32,000 audio hours, delivering more than 155,000 transcripts, and scanning over 133,000 court files. This effort combines access to digital court records with practical experience and employment opportunities for Kenyan youth.
Why It's Important?
This partnership is significant as it addresses both technological advancement and youth employment in Kenya. By digitizing judiciary records, the program enhances efficiency and accessibility within the legal system, which can lead to improved governance and transparency. Simultaneously, it provides critical digital skills and employment opportunities for young people, many of whom face barriers to employment. This 'impact sourcing' approach connects business demand with opportunities for underserved populations, fostering economic growth and social inclusion. The training provided by the ITC ensures that participants acquire relevant and marketable skills, contributing to a more skilled workforce and strengthening Kenya's digital economy. The success metrics demonstrate a tangible positive impact on both the judiciary's operations and the livelihoods of young Kenyans.
What's Next?
Adept Technologies continues to focus on its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) approach, which includes building pathways to opportunity through digital work. The company aims to expand similar programs that connect digital skills, inclusive participation, and dignified work with real business needs. The experience gained from the Kenyan Judiciary project will likely inform future initiatives in other sectors or regions, potentially replicating the model of training and employing young people for digitization efforts. Adept Technologies also emphasizes continuous improvement in resource use and responsible technology adoption, including human-in-the-loop AI, to ensure ethical and quality service delivery. The company's commitment to the UN Global Compact principles suggests ongoing efforts to align its operations with global sustainability and social development goals.
Beyond the Headlines
The collaboration between Adept Technologies and the International Trade Centre highlights a growing trend of leveraging digital transformation for social good. Beyond the immediate benefits of employment and judicial efficiency, such programs contribute to long-term societal development by empowering youth with future-proof skills. This initiative also serves as a model for how international organizations and private companies can work together to address complex challenges in developing nations, particularly in areas of governance and economic empowerment. The focus on ethical business conduct, data protection, and responsible AI within Adept Technologies' broader ESG framework suggests a holistic approach to corporate responsibility, aiming to create sustainable impact beyond mere project completion. This model could inspire similar initiatives in other countries seeking to digitize public services while simultaneously boosting youth employment.
