What's Happening?
Outdoor Retailer (OR), produced by Forge, has announced a new partnership with Huginbiz AB to introduce an International Pavilion Program at its August 18-20, 2027 event in Minneapolis. Huginbiz, a Sweden-based firm specializing in international growth
for sport, outdoor, and fitness companies, will act as OR’s international advisor and recruiter. The program aims to bring curated groups of international finished-goods brands to the show floor, focusing on companies that design, own, and market their own consumer products. This initiative marks OR’s first dedicated international program since its relocation to the Minneapolis Convention Center and follows a successful 2026 debut that surpassed exhibitor and buyer goals. The program is modeled after the national and regional pavilion structures seen at ISPO, with Huginbiz leading outreach to pavilion organizers such as trade associations and export councils from regions like Korea, Iberia, the Nordics, and Taiwan.
Why It's Important?
This partnership is significant for the U.S. outdoor retail market as it aims to diversify the range of brands available to American consumers and retailers. By facilitating the entry of international brands, the program could introduce innovative products and new competition, potentially driving down prices or increasing product quality and variety. For U.S. retailers, it offers a streamlined way to discover and connect with global brands without extensive international travel. This could lead to unique product offerings in stores, differentiating them in a competitive market. The program also signals a strengthening of Outdoor Retailer's position as a key industry event, attracting a broader international presence and fostering global trade relationships within the outdoor sector. The focus on finished-goods brands ensures that the showcased products are ready for retail, directly benefiting buyers looking for new inventory.
What's Next?
Huginbiz will begin meeting with prospective pavilion organizers at ISPO Amsterdam from November 3–5, 2026, to recruit participants for the Outdoor Retailer 2027 event. National and regional organizations interested in leading a pavilion are encouraged to contact Huginbiz. The International Advisory Board, comprising pavilion organizers, brand representatives, and association leaders, will be convened by Huginbiz to guide international brand development throughout the 2027 show cycle. Brands exhibiting in these international pavilions will gain access to existing OR programs, including a hosted buyer program, the Wild Reach creator program, and dedicated showcases for new brands like the REI Co-op Path Ahead Ventures. The success of this inaugural international program will likely influence future iterations and the overall global reach of Outdoor Retailer events.
Beyond the Headlines
The launch of this international pavilion program reflects a broader trend in the outdoor industry towards globalization and the increasing demand for diverse, specialized products. It highlights the challenges international brands face in entering the U.S. market, such as high costs and uncertainty, which this program aims to mitigate by offering a collective entry point. This initiative could also foster greater cultural exchange within the outdoor community, as different regions bring their unique approaches to outdoor gear and experiences. Furthermore, it underscores the importance of trade shows as vital platforms for business development, networking, and trend-spotting in an era where digital commerce is prevalent. The program's success could set a precedent for how other U.S. trade shows attract and integrate international participants, potentially leading to a more interconnected global marketplace for outdoor goods.
