What's Happening?
IHG Hotels & Resorts has announced that it has surpassed 200 open hotels in Canada, with plans to further expand its presence in the country. The company has nearly 40 hotels in its development pipeline, with six additional hotels set to open this year
in Barrie, Aurora East, Pembroke, and Woodstock. These new openings include Holiday Inn, Candlewood Suites, and Staybridge Suites properties. This expansion follows the addition of seven new hotels in Canada in 2025, including a Crowne Plaza in Toronto and four Staybridge Suites properties. IHG's growth strategy in Canada includes the introduction of new brands such as voco hotels and the Garner brand, which is scheduled to debut in 2027.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of IHG Hotels & Resorts in Canada is significant as it aligns with the expected increase in tourism in the country. Destination Canada forecasts a 6% year-over-year rise in visitor spending, exceeding $140 billion. This growth is driven by a resurgence in domestic travel across urban, suburban, and secondary markets. IHG's strategic expansion positions the company to capitalize on this trend, enhancing its market share and brand presence in key Canadian markets. The introduction of new brands and properties also reflects IHG's commitment to meeting diverse consumer preferences and increasing demand for midscale hotel conversions.
What's Next?
IHG's continued expansion in Canada is likely to influence the competitive landscape of the hospitality industry in the region. As the company introduces new brands and properties, it may prompt other hotel chains to enhance their offerings and expand their presence to maintain market share. Additionally, the anticipated debut of the Garner brand in 2027 will further diversify IHG's portfolio, potentially attracting new customer segments. The ongoing development of nearly 40 hotels in the pipeline suggests that IHG is poised for sustained growth in the Canadian market.
