What's Happening?
Simon & Schuster is relaunching its Pocket Books imprint to focus on bestselling self-published and hybrid authors. The imprint, led by Anh Schluep, will concentrate on commercial fiction, particularly romance, and will no longer publish mass market paperbacks.
Instead, Pocket Books will acquire self-published authors for print editions, with plans to release two to three trade paperback titles per month starting January 2027. This move marks a significant shift for the publisher, as it aims to provide a dedicated platform for self-published authors within the traditional publishing framework.
Why It's Important?
The relaunch of Pocket Books signifies a growing recognition of the self-publishing sector's potential within the traditional publishing industry. By dedicating an established imprint to self-published authors, Simon & Schuster is acknowledging the success and marketability of these authors, many of whom have built substantial followings through platforms like Kindle Direct Publishing. This move could encourage more self-published authors to consider traditional publishing routes, potentially increasing competition and innovation within the industry. It also highlights the evolving landscape of publishing, where traditional and self-publishing models are increasingly intersecting.
