What's Happening?
Greenland Mines has entered into a diamond drilling contract with Nordisk Fundering for its Skaergaard precious and critical metals project in southeast Greenland. The 2026 field campaign will involve approximately 7,500 meters of helicopter-supported
core drilling, focusing on advancing resource categories and collecting metallurgical material. The campaign aims to gather geotechnical data to evaluate potential open-pit development scenarios. Greenland Mines has arranged logistical support, including an icebreaker and accommodation base camp vessel with a helicopter platform. The drilling will utilize three helicopter-portable rigs capable of operating on both rock and ice-covered sites. Nordisk Fundering, a Scandinavian contractor with Arctic drilling experience, will provide geotechnical expertise for mine planning and pit-wall design.
Why It's Important?
This development marks a significant step forward in the Skaergaard project's progression towards potential open-pit mining. The data collected from this drilling campaign will be crucial for future economic assessments and resource evaluations. Greenland Mines' collaboration with Nordisk Fundering and GTK Mintec highlights the importance of technical expertise and comprehensive planning in advancing mining projects in challenging environments. The success of this campaign could enhance Greenland's position in the global mining industry, particularly in the extraction of precious and critical metals, which are vital for various technological applications. This project also underscores the strategic importance of Arctic resources and the need for sustainable and responsible mining practices.
What's Next?
As the drilling campaign progresses, Greenland Mines will likely focus on analyzing the collected data to refine its resource estimates and development plans. The company may also explore partnerships or investments to support the project's next phases, including potential open-pit mining operations. Regulatory approvals and environmental assessments will be critical steps in advancing the project. The outcomes of this campaign could influence future exploration and mining activities in the Arctic region, setting precedents for operational strategies and environmental stewardship.
