What's Happening?
The Port of Long Beach has signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) to explore the use of small modular reactor (SMR) technology for maritime applications. This partnership aims to support
the development of nuclear-powered vessels for commercial service, aligning with Long Beach's goal to double its container volume by 2050. The port, one of the largest in the United States, handled nearly 9.9 million TEU in 2025 and continues to grow. The collaboration will involve the U.S. Coast Guard, the Department of Energy, and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to establish safety standards and operational protocols for SMR-powered vessels.
