What's Happening?
A recent study analyzed how AI platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude influence the visibility of beauty brands. The research, which logged over 1,335 brand mentions and 690 source citations, found that AI recommendations are not random
but favor brands with established authority in specific categories. Brands such as e.l.f., Maybelline, and Charlotte Tilbury were frequently recommended across budget and luxury beauty queries. The study highlighted that AI platforms rely heavily on third-party validation, with Reddit emerging as the most cited source. The findings suggest that beauty brands should focus on securing coverage in trusted publications and engaging authentically with communities to enhance AI visibility.
Why It's Important?
The study underscores the growing influence of AI in shaping consumer perceptions and purchasing decisions in the beauty industry. As AI platforms become integral to how consumers discover and evaluate products, brands that effectively leverage these technologies can gain a competitive edge. The reliance on third-party validation over brand-owned content indicates a shift in marketing strategies, emphasizing the importance of earned media and community engagement. This trend could significantly impact how beauty brands allocate resources towards digital marketing and public relations efforts.
