What's Happening?
U.S. Soccer has announced the national rollout of R90+, a new referee development program designed to transform the pathway for officials with talent and ambition. This 24-month program provides talented referees with access to coaching, mentoring, and high-level
match environments at no cost. The inaugural cohort includes 60 officials from 13 State Associations across the South Region, with development opportunities beginning in Fall 2026. R90+ focuses on four core elements: U.S. Refereeing Way+ (technical standards, decision-making, game management), Soccer IQ+ (understanding the game, tactical awareness), Fit for Purpose+ (physical preparation, recovery), and Perform+ (mental performance, wellbeing, execution, reflection). The program aims to address the inconsistency and lack of clarity in the traditional referee development path, ensuring that talent is nurtured regardless of an official's starting point or financial means.
Why It's Important?
The R90+ program is a significant investment in the future of soccer officiating in the United States. By providing structured, no-cost development to talented referees, U.S. Soccer is addressing a critical need to expand and deepen the pool of high-quality officials. This initiative can lead to improved game quality across all levels of soccer, from youth leagues to professional matches, by ensuring that referees are better trained, more consistent, and equipped with advanced skills. A stronger referee corps enhances the integrity and fairness of the sport, which is vital for its growth and popularity. Furthermore, by removing financial barriers, the program promotes greater diversity and inclusivity within the referee community, allowing talent from all backgrounds to pursue officiating at higher levels.
What's Next?
Following the launch in the South Region, U.S. Soccer plans to expand the R90+ program nationally. The Northeast Region is scheduled to join in January 2027, followed by the West Region in April 2027, and the Midwest & Plains Region in June 2027. Approximately 200 officials are expected to participate in the program across these regions. Participants in the inaugural South Region cohort will complete onboarding and establish their development plans ahead of MLS NEXT Fest in early December 2026, which will serve as their first major development opportunity. U.S. Soccer will continue to connect participants with experienced coaches and mentors, including current and former MLS and NWSL referees and FIFA officials, to guide their development.
Beyond the Headlines
The R90+ program represents a strategic shift in how U.S. Soccer approaches talent development, recognizing that investment in human capital is as crucial as investment in players and facilities. This initiative could serve as a model for other sports organizations looking to professionalize and standardize their officiating pathways. The comprehensive nature of the program, addressing not only technical skills but also physical and mental aspects, reflects a holistic understanding of what it takes to succeed at elite levels of sports officiating. By fostering a culture of continuous learning and mentorship, U.S. Soccer is building a sustainable pipeline of officials, which is essential for the long-term health and credibility of the sport in the U.S.
