What's Happening?
The legendary English rock supergroup ASIA has released their new studio album, 'Indigo,' through Frontiers Music Srl. The album features a new lineup including Geoffrey Downes, Virgil Donati, John Mitchell, and Harry Whitley. 'Indigo' incorporates some
of the final compositions by the late John Wetton, specifically "Tattoo Indigo (Parts 2 & 3)" and "Chesapeake Bay." The album also includes guest appearances from Steve Howe on acoustic guitar for "Chesapeake Bay" and Mike Portnoy on the bonus track "Tattoo Indigo (Part 3)." John Mitchell, who also mixed and mastered the album, contributed to the writing, including the track "Is This The Life?" The initial writing for the album began in 2015 with Geoff Downes and John Wetton, but was put on hold due to Wetton's illness and subsequent passing. A tribute concert for John Wetton in 2023 spurred the decision to complete and release these songs.
Why It's Important?
The release of 'Indigo' is significant for fans of progressive rock and the legacy of ASIA, particularly in the U.S. market where the band has a dedicated following. The inclusion of John Wetton's final compositions provides a poignant connection to the band's original sound and history, offering a sense of continuity for long-time listeners. The album's blend of classic ASIA elements with new contributions from the current lineup, including Harry Whitley's vocals which evoke Wetton's style, aims to re-establish the band's presence. This release could reignite interest in their extensive catalog and potentially lead to increased touring activity across the U.S., impacting the live music industry and merchandise sales. For the music industry, it demonstrates the enduring appeal of classic rock acts and the potential for new material to honor and extend a band's legacy.
What's Next?
Following the release of 'Indigo,' ASIA is looking forward to taking to the road again, building on their resurgence of live activity across the U.S., Japan, and Europe in 2024 and 2025. This suggests potential future tours and performances in the United States, which would offer fans opportunities to experience the new music live. The band's aim to put ASIA back on the map indicates a strategic effort to maintain and grow their audience. Future activities may include further promotional efforts for the album, potentially leading to more music videos or special editions. The success of 'Indigo' could also influence future recording projects and collaborations for the band members.
Beyond the Headlines
The creation of 'Indigo' highlights the complex process of continuing a band's artistic journey after the loss of a key member. The album serves as both a tribute and a new chapter, navigating the challenge of honoring a legacy while introducing new creative elements. The decision to complete Wetton's unfinished works and the careful selection of a vocalist whose tone resonates with the band's original sound reflect a deep respect for ASIA's history and its fanbase. This approach raises broader questions about artistic succession and the evolution of iconic bands, demonstrating how groups can adapt and find new vitality while preserving their core identity. It also underscores the emotional connection between artists and their audience, particularly when dealing with themes of remembrance and continuity.
