What's Happening?
Wolfspeed has entered into a multiyear agreement to supply silicon carbide (SiC) devices to BorgWarner for its 800V inverter platform. This agreement extends the existing collaboration between the two companies, ensuring BorgWarner will have consistent
access to Wolfspeed's SiC devices for electric vehicle (EV) and power conversion applications. BorgWarner will integrate Wolfspeed's 1,200V SiC technology into its inverter platform. Wolfspeed's Gen 5 SiC technology is specifically engineered to meet the high efficiency, performance, and reliability demands of automotive power electronics. Furthermore, Wolfspeed has completed the transition of its U.S. manufacturing operations to 200 mm wafers, enhancing its production capabilities. Matthias Buchner, Wolfspeed's Senior Vice President of Global Sales and Chief Marketing Officer, emphasized that this partnership aligns with Wolfspeed's strategy of combining technological leadership with long-term customer relationships, providing BorgWarner with advanced SiC technology, proven quality, and reliable supply for its next-generation EV platforms.
Why It's Important?
This agreement is significant for the U.S. automotive and semiconductor industries, particularly in the rapidly expanding electric vehicle market. By securing a long-term supply of silicon carbide devices from Wolfspeed, BorgWarner can solidify its position in the EV powertrain sector, ensuring the availability of critical components for its 800V inverter platform. This platform is crucial for developing more efficient and powerful EVs, which can lead to faster charging times and extended range, key factors in consumer adoption. For Wolfspeed, the deal reinforces its role as a leading supplier of SiC technology, demonstrating the market's trust in its Gen 5 SiC technology and its 200 mm wafer manufacturing capabilities. This partnership also highlights the increasing reliance on advanced semiconductor materials like silicon carbide for the performance and reliability of next-generation automotive electronics, driving innovation and investment in domestic manufacturing and technological development.
What's Next?
The multiyear agreement between Wolfspeed and BorgWarner is expected to lead to the continued integration of Wolfspeed's silicon carbide technology into BorgWarner's 800V inverter platforms for future electric vehicle models. This collaboration will likely accelerate the development and deployment of more advanced and efficient EV powertrains in the market. As Wolfspeed continues to scale its 200 mm wafer manufacturing, it will be better positioned to meet the growing demand from automotive partners like BorgWarner. Other automotive suppliers and EV manufacturers may also seek similar long-term supply agreements for SiC devices to secure their supply chains and enhance their product offerings. This trend could further solidify the U.S.'s position in the global EV component supply chain and drive further innovation in silicon carbide technology and its applications.
Beyond the Headlines
This partnership underscores a broader strategic shift within the automotive industry towards higher voltage architectures (like 800V) in electric vehicles, driven by the need for faster charging and improved performance. Silicon carbide is a critical enabler of this shift due to its superior efficiency and thermal properties compared to traditional silicon. The long-term commitment between Wolfspeed and BorgWarner also highlights the increasing importance of supply chain resilience and strategic partnerships in high-tech manufacturing. As geopolitical tensions and global supply chain disruptions persist, securing domestic or reliable international sources for critical components like SiC devices becomes paramount for companies operating in the U.S. This agreement could also spur further investment in SiC research and development, potentially leading to new applications beyond EVs, such as in renewable energy systems and industrial power conversion, further solidifying the U.S.'s technological leadership in these areas.
