What's Happening?
A new European Union project, MELANGE, is targeting a 50% reduction in the environmental impact of textile coloration. This initiative, led by Aalto University in Finland and involving a consortium of nine partners from seven European countries, focuses
on interior textiles, which represent approximately one-third of global textile production. The project aims to advance low-impact fiber-stage coloration technologies, such as spin, dope, and solution dyeing. Unlike conventional methods that prioritize uniformity and often lead to significant water, energy, and chemical consumption, MELANGE will treat color variation as a unique aesthetic rather than a defect. This approach is inspired by traditional practices in Prato, Tuscany, where pre-colored recycled fibers are blended by shade, avoiding re-dyeing. The project seeks to cut water and chemical use by up to 50% compared to current finishing-stage processes, addressing barriers in aesthetics, production practices, business models, and policy.

Textile ETP, a key partner, will lead dissemination and communication activities, integrating MELANGE into ECOSYSTEX, an initiative fostering collaboration among EU projects on textile circularity.
