Elon Musk's Starlink is pursuing regulatory approval in India for its next-generation low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation, known as Gen 2. This constellation, if approved, would comprise 30,000 satellites and is designed to support direct-to-device
(D2D) connectivity. Starlink has reapplied to the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) for this approval, after Indian authorities initially approved only its Gen 1 constellation. The Gen 2 network's D2D capabilities would allow compatible mobile devices to connect directly to satellites, bypassing the need for traditional satellite terminals used for conventional Starlink broadband.
