Summit Carbon Solutions has decided to abandon two-thirds of its planned carbon dioxide underground storage project in North Dakota. The company had previously secured permits to store CO2 in three designated areas in central North Dakota but has now
requested the cancellation of permits for two of these areas, identified as Summit #1 and Summit #2. In a filing with the North Dakota Supreme Court, Summit stated that it would not proceed with the development, construction, operation, or implementation of these two proposed storage facilities due to business judgment. This decision follows a North Dakota district court's earlier voiding of permits for all three areas, a ruling that Summit and the state are currently appealing. The company is now asking the Supreme Court to limit the appeal to only one storage area, Summit #3, where it claims to have secured approximately 98% of the necessary storage rights.
