OCI Tokuyama Semiconductor Materials Sdn Bhd (OTSM), in a joint venture with South Korea’s OCI, is establishing a new polysilicon synthesis and deposition plant in Malaysia. This facility is expected to be completed next spring and is a key part of Tokuyama’s
strategy to diversify its supply sources and increase its production capacity. The company, which ranks third globally in semiconductor-grade polysilicon production with approximately 20% market share, is responding to increased demand for semiconductor materials. The Malaysian plant, alongside a planned Vietnamese facility, will contribute to a 50% increase in Tokuyama's total production capacity, reaching 12,500 tonnes per year. This expansion aims to address the growing demand for semiconductor-grade polysilicon, which has been significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and the rising need for components driven by artificial intelligence.

Customer forecasts indicate that demand for polysilicon will exceed the capacity of Tokuyama's existing Japanese plant around 2027, suggesting that the additional output from the new Southeast Asian facilities will be fully absorbed within three to four years. Tokuyama is also considering further capacity expansion at all three facilities, including its Japanese plant, which is nearing its production limit.
