What's Happening?
LS Marine Solution, a subsidiary of LS Cable & System, has commenced the construction of a new cable laying vessel (CLV) at Tersan Shipyard in Türkiye. This vessel is designed for long-distance high-voltage direct current (HVDC) and large-scale offshore
wind grid projects. The steel-cutting ceremony marked the beginning of the construction, with the vessel expected to be delivered in the first half of 2028. The CLV will have a cable loading capacity of 13,000 tons, making it South Korea's largest cable layer. It aims to enhance efficiency by allowing long-distance cables to be installed in a single voyage, thereby reducing cable jointing and transportation times. This new vessel will join the existing GL2030, forming a two-vessel fleet for global power grid projects. The construction aligns with LS Cable & System's recent selection for the Haesong 3 Offshore Wind Project and the planned start of commercial production at LS GreenLink, its U.S.-based submarine cable manufacturing subsidiary.
Why It's Important?
The construction of this new cable laying vessel represents a significant advancement in the infrastructure needed for large-scale offshore wind and power grid projects. By increasing the capacity and efficiency of cable installation, LS Marine Solution is positioning itself as a key player in the global energy transition towards renewable sources. The vessel's ability to install long-distance cables in a single voyage will likely reduce costs and time associated with such projects, benefiting the renewable energy sector. This development is particularly relevant for North America and Europe, where integrated turnkey delivery is planned. The expansion of LS Cable & System's capabilities could lead to increased competitiveness and influence in the international market for renewable energy infrastructure.
What's Next?
The next steps involve the continued construction of the vessel, with a focus on meeting the delivery timeline set for the first half of 2028. As the vessel nears completion, LS Marine Solution will likely engage in strategic planning for its deployment in upcoming projects, particularly in North America and Europe. The company may also explore additional partnerships or contracts to maximize the vessel's utilization. Furthermore, the start of commercial production at LS GreenLink will be a critical milestone, potentially leading to further expansion and innovation in submarine cable manufacturing.
