What's Happening?
Hillel International has launched the Men to Mensches (M2M) program, a peer-led initiative aimed at increasing Jewish male engagement on college campuses. Developed at Penn State Hillel and supported by the Maimonides Fund, M2M involves a four-session
conversation series on Jewish values and identity, conducted within existing male-networked communities such as fraternities and athletic teams. The program addresses the challenge of declining male participation in Jewish life by empowering students to lead discussions among their peers. This approach shifts the role of professional educators from primary facilitators to trainers and coaches, supporting peer facilitators in their leadership roles. The initiative has shown promise in transforming male students' participation from passive to active, fostering a sense of ownership and leadership in Jewish life.
Why It's Important?
The M2M program is significant as it addresses a critical issue of male disengagement in Jewish communities, particularly on college campuses. By leveraging peer-led discussions, the program taps into the trust students have in their peers over traditional authorities. This model not only enhances Jewish identity and belonging but also encourages young men to see themselves as contributors and leaders. The success of M2M could serve as a blueprint for similar initiatives across other campuses, potentially revitalizing male participation in Jewish life and strengthening the broader Jewish ecosystem. The program's focus on existing communities rather than creating new ones ensures that it meets students where they are, making Jewish learning more accessible and relevant.
What's Next?
Hillel International plans to expand the M2M program to 17 campuses, testing its scalability and effectiveness in different environments. This expansion is part of a broader research and development approach to identify successful campus initiatives and explore strategies to enhance male engagement in Jewish life. The outcomes of these pilots will provide valuable insights into best practices and inform future efforts to strengthen male participation across Jewish communities. As the program grows, it will continue to challenge assumptions and refine its methods, aiming to create meaningful change and inspire other educational institutions to adopt similar models.
