What's Happening?
Extell Development Co. is developing The StandardX Times Square, an approximately 1,800-key hotel in Manhattan’s Theater District, New York City. This project is slated to open in the second half of 2028 and will mark the North American debut of The StandardX brand.
The hotel is designed to be a flagship property, distinguishing itself from future StandardX hotels with its extensive scale and range of attractions. According to Hyatt Hotels Corp., the property will feature a free-fall ride, an observation deck situated over 1,000 feet high, a rooftop pool, multiple restaurants and bars, and various public social spaces. Amar Lalvani, Hyatt’s chief creative officer and president and creative director for The Lifestyle Group, noted that while StandardX typically places guests in lively neighborhoods, much of the activity at this Times Square location will be contained within the building itself. Ari Alowan Goldstein, Extell’s senior vice president, emphasized that the project aims to be a distinctive development in a prominent location.
Why It's Important?
The development of The StandardX Times Square signifies a significant investment in New York City's hospitality sector, particularly in the iconic Theater District. The introduction of a large-scale, attraction-rich hotel could boost tourism and economic activity in the area, drawing both domestic and international visitors. For Hyatt Hotels Corp., this project represents an expansion of its lifestyle brand portfolio in a key U.S. market, potentially increasing its market share and brand visibility. The unique features, such as a free-fall ride and a high-altitude observation deck, could set new benchmarks for urban hotel experiences, influencing future hospitality design and offerings. This development also reflects ongoing confidence in the recovery and growth of the U.S. travel and tourism industry, providing job opportunities in construction, hospitality, and related services. The project's success could encourage further investment in experiential hotels across major U.S. cities.
What's Next?
The StandardX Times Square is expected to open in the second half of 2028. Leading up to its opening, Extell Development Co. will continue with construction and development phases. Hyatt Hotels Corp. will likely focus on pre-opening marketing campaigns to generate interest and bookings for the new flagship property. The hotel will need to staff its extensive operations, including management, guest services, food and beverage, and attractions staff. The performance of this large-scale, experience-driven hotel will be closely watched by the hospitality industry, as it could influence future development strategies for urban hotels. Additionally, the project's impact on local tourism and the competitive landscape of Times Square hotels will become clearer once it is operational. Hyatt is also exploring financing options, smaller hotel prototypes, and conversion brands to facilitate expansion in more U.S. markets, indicating a broader strategy for growth beyond this specific project.
