What's Happening?
A new global study, 'The State of Omnichannel Commerce 2026/2027,' conducted by Anchanto and Demand Metric, reveals a significant disparity between how enterprise brands and retailers perceive their omnichannel performance and their actual operational
maturity. The study, which surveyed 408 commerce decision-makers from companies generating over $100 million annually across North America, Europe, MEA, and APAC, identifies this discrepancy as the 'Omnichannel Execution Gap.' While 86% of respondents expressed satisfaction with their omnichannel performance, only 12% described their operations as optimized, and a mere 6% reported having end-to-end visibility. Furthermore, 55% of these businesses still rely heavily on manual coordination. The report highlights that disconnected systems, fragmented workflows, and limited visibility are primary barriers preventing consistent execution across various channels, inventory, fulfillment, and delivery processes. This gap suggests that while retailers are confident in their omnichannel strategies, their underlying operational infrastructure often lags, hindering effective implementation.
Why It's Important?
The 'Omnichannel Execution Gap' has critical implications for U.S. retailers, as it directly impacts customer retention, transaction value, and overall market competitiveness. Retailers with robust omnichannel strategies retain approximately 89% of their customers, significantly higher than the 33% retention rate for those without such strategies. Additionally, omnichannel customers tend to spend 10-15% more per transaction. The study underscores that the true challenge is not a technology gap but a data gap, specifically the absence of a single, shared source of product data accessible across all channels. This fragmentation leads to inconsistencies in product presentation, pricing, and availability, eroding customer trust and increasing operational costs. For U.S. businesses, closing this gap is crucial for maximizing revenue, enhancing customer loyalty, and effectively leveraging advanced technologies like AI, which depend on integrated and high-quality data for optimal performance.
What's Next?
To address the 'Omnichannel Execution Gap,' retailers must shift their focus from piecemeal technology upgrades to developing a connected digital platform that integrates their entire operations. This involves establishing a single source of truth for all product data, ensuring consistent pricing and promotions across all channels, and synchronizing inventory management. The report suggests that while AI and data capabilities are high on the commerce transformation agenda for 53% of respondents, their effectiveness is contingent on a solid operational foundation. Therefore, the immediate next step for many retailers will be to evaluate their operational reality more closely, invest in integrated systems, and streamline workflows to support automation and AI. This will enable them to improve efficiency, protect margins, and scale customer experiences effectively, ultimately leading to better customer retention and increased transaction values.
Beyond the Headlines
The 'Omnichannel Execution Gap' points to a deeper challenge within the retail sector: the struggle to translate strategic vision into operational reality. The high confidence levels among retailers, despite significant operational inefficiencies, suggest a potential disconnect between leadership's perception and the day-to-day execution challenges faced by their teams. This gap can lead to significant ethical and reputational risks, as inconsistent pricing or product availability can frustrate customers and damage brand loyalty. Furthermore, the reliance on manual coordination in over half of the surveyed businesses indicates a broader issue of underinvestment in foundational data infrastructure and process automation. Addressing this requires not just technological solutions but also a cultural shift towards data-driven decision-making and a commitment to continuous operational improvement, ensuring that every customer touchpoint reflects a unified and reliable brand experience.
