What's Happening?
Iowa Workforce Development has announced a new statewide grant program, Advanced Manufacturing Pathways Development (AMP’D Iowa), aimed at addressing skilled labor shortages in the state's advanced manufacturing sector. The initiative is funded by a $4.7
million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Industry-Driven Skills Training Fund. The program will support employer-led training focused on production, machine maintenance, and other skills gaps. Grant applications will open on June 29, with an informational webinar scheduled for June 23. Priority funding will be given to small and medium-sized employers, with Iowa State University’s Center for Industrial Research and Service serving as a technical partner. This initiative builds on Iowa’s Manufacturing 4.0 initiative, which helped manufacturers invest in smart technology and digital equipment.
Why It's Important?
The AMP’D Iowa initiative is crucial for maintaining the competitiveness of Iowa's manufacturing sector, which is the state's second-largest employment sector, accounting for over 217,000 jobs and approximately 17% of the state’s annual GDP. With job growth in the sector projected to expand by nearly 15% over the next decade, more than double the national average, the program aims to upskill the workforce, implement new processes, and strengthen the talent pipeline. This initiative not only supports the manufacturing industry but also creates more opportunities for Iowans to thrive in well-paying careers, thereby contributing to the state's economic growth.
What's Next?
The next steps involve the opening of grant applications on June 29, with interested parties encouraged to participate in the informational webinar on June 23. Employers, especially small and medium-sized ones, are expected to assess their workforce needs and identify training priorities with the help of Iowa State University’s Center for Industrial Research and Service. The program is anticipated to foster collaboration between employers and educational institutions, ensuring that the training provided aligns with industry needs and economic priorities.
