What's Happening?
Sadie Roskens, a freshman at Iowa State University, is successfully managing multiple roles as a dance studio owner, a full-time advertising and fashion merchandising student, and a TikTok content creator. Hailing from Eldora, Iowa, Roskens utilizes her
TikTok platform to promote positivity and originality, primarily sharing fashion-related content such as outfit checks and shopping hauls, alongside day-in-the-life videos. While she aims to expand her TikTok presence, she views it more as a hobby than a full-time career aspiration. Her social media activity has also facilitated connections with peers on campus. Roskens's passion for social media began in her youth, often taking on a directorial role in videos made with her sisters. In addition to her personal account, she creates content for Opalane Boutique, a local small business, which has further fueled her interest in advertising and fashion merchandising. She is also involved with Paragon Magazine Club as a photo shoot lead and is part of SALT’s social media team at Cornerstone Church.
Why It's Important?
Roskens's multifaceted engagement highlights the evolving landscape of personal branding and career development for young individuals. Her ability to integrate academic pursuits with entrepreneurial ventures and digital content creation showcases a modern approach to building a professional profile. The use of TikTok as a platform for creative expression and community building demonstrates its significance beyond mere entertainment, serving as a tool for networking and personal growth. Her experience with Opalane Boutique illustrates how social media skills can be directly applied to support local businesses, bridging the gap between digital influence and tangible economic impact. Furthermore, her story reflects the increasing trend of individuals leveraging digital platforms to explore diverse interests and potential career paths, emphasizing the importance of adaptability and multi-skilling in today's dynamic environment.
What's Next?
Roskens plans to graduate from Iowa State in three years, during which time she will continue to develop her dance company, Sadies Dance Co., which currently has 35 dancers and one employee. She remains open to various career paths post-graduation, including expanding her dance business, pursuing full-time social media work, entering corporate advertising, or working within the fashion industry. Her ongoing activities with Paragon Magazine Club and SALT’s social media team will further hone her skills in content creation and marketing. As her social media presence grows, it may open new opportunities for collaborations or brand partnerships, further influencing her career trajectory. Her journey will likely continue to evolve as she navigates her academic and professional interests, with her TikTok platform serving as a dynamic portfolio of her creative and entrepreneurial endeavors.
Beyond the Headlines
Roskens's narrative subtly underscores the broader cultural shift towards a gig economy and the rise of the 'creator economy,' where individuals can monetize their passions and skills through digital platforms. Her story exemplifies how traditional educational paths are increasingly complemented by self-taught digital competencies and entrepreneurial initiatives. The balance she strikes between academic rigor, business ownership, and social media engagement reflects a generation that values autonomy and diverse experiences over singular career trajectories. This approach challenges conventional notions of career progression, suggesting a future where individuals curate their professional lives through a blend of formal education, personal ventures, and digital influence. Her emphasis on positivity and originality on TikTok also speaks to the platform's potential as a space for authentic self-expression and community building, moving beyond superficial trends.
