What's Happening?
Alchemab Therapeutics, a clinical-stage biotechnology company, has received a significant investment of £25 million (approximately USD $34 million) from the British Business Bank. This funding is part of the company's Series A financing, which now totals
£109 million. The investment will support the expansion of Alchemab's Resiliome™ platform, which uses AI algorithms to identify naturally occurring antibodies in individuals with resilience to hard-to-treat diseases. The platform aims to enhance the company's antibody database from 500 million to a billion sequences and advance additional candidates into clinical development. Alchemab's first asset, ATLX-1282, an antibody therapeutic for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), has already been licensed to Eli Lilly, validating the potential of the Resiliome approach.
Why It's Important?
This investment underscores the growing importance of AI in drug discovery, particularly in the field of antibody therapeutics. By expanding its database and advancing its clinical pipeline, Alchemab is poised to make significant contributions to the treatment of diseases with unmet medical needs. The funding also highlights the UK's commitment to fostering innovation in the life sciences sector, potentially positioning the country as a leader in biotechnology. The success of Alchemab's platform could lead to breakthroughs in the development of novel therapeutics, benefiting patients worldwide and driving economic growth in the biotech industry.
