What's Happening?
Peptistar, a Japanese contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO), has begun using Asahi Kasei's forward osmosis–membrane distillation (FO–MD) system at a manufacturing scale for active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). This system, developed
by Asahi Kasei in 2018, allows for the dehydration and concentration of liquids without heat or pressure, reducing the need for freeze-drying batches and shortening manufacturing time. The demand for APIs has evolved from traditional small molecules to more complex biologics and peptides, which are sensitive to heat. The FO–MD system addresses these challenges by concentrating raw materials without heat, thus preserving the quality of APIs.
Why It's Important?
The integration of Asahi Kasei's FO–MD system by Peptistar marks a significant innovation in the pharmaceutical manufacturing process. This technology could revolutionize the production of heat-sensitive APIs, such as peptides and oligonucleotides, by offering a more efficient and less energy-intensive alternative to traditional freeze-drying methods. The ability to concentrate APIs without heat or pressure not only preserves their quality but also reduces production costs and time. This advancement is crucial as the pharmaceutical industry increasingly focuses on next-generation therapeutics, which require more sophisticated manufacturing techniques. The successful implementation of this system could set a new standard in API production, benefiting pharmaceutical companies and ultimately, patients.
