What's Happening?
Kim and Kyle Lehman, self-described 'crazy band parents,' are organizing and funding large-scale tailgate meals for all 600 members of the Bowling Green State University (BGSU) Marching Band before each home football game this fall. The couple, from Ottoville,
Ohio, began by feeding their son's euphonium section and gradually expanded their efforts to include the entire band. They estimate the cost to be around $3,000 per home game. Menus are planned for the season, offering breakfast buffets for early games and options like pulled pork, tacos, and smoked chicken for later games. The Lehmans start cooking as early as 5:30 a.m. on game days and have the blessing of BGSU President Rodney Rogers, who arranged a designated spot for their operations near the stadium.
Why It's Important?
This initiative by the Lehman family highlights the significant role of volunteerism and community support in collegiate extracurricular activities, particularly for large organizations like marching bands. The provision of substantial meals addresses a critical need, as band members often undergo rigorous practice schedules and performances without adequate nutrition, which can impact their energy levels and overall well-being. This effort not only supports the physical health of the students but also fosters a sense of community and appreciation within the band. It also underscores the financial commitment often required from families to supplement university resources for student groups, demonstrating how individual generosity can profoundly enhance the student experience.
What's Next?
The Lehman family plans to continue their extensive tailgating efforts for the BGSU Marching Band throughout the upcoming football season. They have established the FMB Tailgate LLC to manage donations, with all contributions directly supporting the meals for the marching band. While their son Wyatt is in his final year with the band, the Lehmans intend to remain involved, indicating a desire to ensure the continuity of this support system. They are actively seeking other 'crazy parents' to potentially take over or assist with the initiative in the future, ensuring that the band members continue to receive these vital meals in subsequent seasons.
Beyond the Headlines
The Lehmans' dedication to feeding the BGSU Marching Band reflects a deeper cultural aspect of collegiate sports and performance groups: the often-unseen support networks that enable student success. While football players receive significant attention and resources, marching band members, who are integral to the game-day experience, often operate with fewer direct support structures for their physical needs. This initiative brings to light the disparities in resource allocation and the critical role that passionate volunteers play in filling these gaps. It also showcases the power of grassroots efforts to build community and provide essential care, fostering a positive environment for student-athletes and performers alike, and potentially inspiring similar initiatives at other institutions.
